We at Galison are very lucky to work only a block from the great New York Public Library building that stretches from 40th to 42nd Street on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan (on the site of an old water reservoir--but that's another story).
Patience and Fortitude, the nearly 100 year old marble lions flanking the main entrance, are our friends and neighbors, so we were especially happy to work with the the New York Public Library Picture Collection to create a set of holiday cards for the NYPL through Galison's Private Label division. The cards feature a painting of one of the Library's iconic lions with a special seasonal accessory.
In the style of Galison's own Galison Green Writer's Notecards, the NYPL cards are made of 100% recycled paper. They are available from the NYPL's online store, and here's a photo of them in the library shop:
Robert Quackenbush illustrated the northernmost library lion, Fortitude, in position with the traditional holiday wreath and some snowflakes beginning to fall. Heather Schellhase, one of our Galison designers visited Mr. Quackenbush in his E. 78th Street studio and took these photos:

Heather reported: "I was just going to take a picture of the display Mr. Quackenbush has in his window, but while photographing I noticed he was in there and asked if I could come in. He was amazingly nice and said he's so impressed with the quality of the cards. He also showed me some of his work, including children's books he's written and illustrated.
Anyways, I talked with him for a good half hour, and it was lovely!"
Robert Quackenbush has written and illustrated more than 200 books for childen. You may smile to remember Detective Mole, Doctor Quack, and Henry the Duck characters or the Miss Mallard mystery series. If not, have a look!
But back to our leonine neighbors. How did the library lions get their nicknames? Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia suggested "Patience"and "Fortitude" because they were qualities New Yorkers needed to endure the economic depression of the 30's. Lucky they are still here to offer encouragement to us today!
