It’s one of those perfect spring days in New York City: daffodils and forsythia are blooming everywhere; planters have been refreshed for spring; the California sea lions are basking on the rocks in the Central Park Zoo, and midtown is full of out of town high school groups lining up at the Abercrombie & Fitch flagship store and throughout the theater district.
This makes me nostalgic for my own high school field trips to NYC---temporary escapes from that small formerly industrial Pennsylvania city immortalized by Billy Joel and a chance to impersonate a cool NYC teenager for the day. These day trips always included blocks of nosebleed tickets to whatever musicals were available, from really terrible ones to classics like Fiddler on the Roof and Man of La Mancha. We had a trip for the chorus, a trip for the honor society, a Spanish class trip…
Here at Galison we do have some homegrown New Yorkers, but many of us moved here because we loved the idea of the place. For those of you all over the world who share this attraction, we have created a cute New York City collection that includes a portfolio of note cards, a lined journal, and a set of mini journal notepads, too:
Enjoy Mike Lowery's renditions of the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, the Chrysler Building, the New York Public Library lion, (can't tell whether it's Patience or Fortitude), the Brooklyn Bridge, the Flatiron Building, a statue of Columbus, St. Patrick's Cathedral, the American Museum of Natural History, Rockefeller Center, the Staten Island Ferry, the Guggenheim Museum, Grand Central Terminal, and a traditional NYC taxi.
In fact, check Mike's webpage--the second photo down shows these New York City illustrations in progress!
Signing off from the Big Apple,
Susan
